NaCCA Just Dropped a Major Update on OWOP – Here’s What You Didn’t Know!

Teachers, school owners, and education stakeholders — NaCCA (National Council for Curriculum and Assessment) has just released a new roadmap regarding the withdrawal of “Our World and Our People” (OWOP) from the primary school curriculum.

If you thought OWOP was gone after the 2024/2025 academic year, think again, there’s a twist you need to know about.

The Big Update from NaCCA

In a circular dated 28th June 2024, NaCCA announced that:

  1. OWOP’s withdrawal has been postponed – Instead of being phased out in the 2024/2025 academic year, it will now be withdrawn in the 2025/2026 academic year.

  2. OWOP textbooks will still be used – Even after the subject is officially withdrawn, the OWOP textbook will be used as supplementary reading material. This is because its strands and sub-strands are being incorporated into other subjects as part of the curriculum review.

  3. Continuous engagement with publishers – NaCCA is working with the Ghana Publishers Association to ensure smooth textbook development and transition.

What This Means for Teachers and Schools

This means your lesson plans, schemes of work, and timetables for 2025/2026 will not include OWOP as a subject, its contents will be spread across other subjects.

Failure to plan ahead may lead to last-minute confusion for both teachers and pupils.

Why You Should Care

  • Teachers – You will need to adjust your teaching approach once OWOP strands are merged into other subjects.

  • School Administrators – Your timetables and curriculum plans will need updating in this 2025/2026 academic year.

  • Parents – This affects how your children will learn about social studies, culture, and civic responsibilities.
