TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS: WHY HOW YOU TREAT A CHILD MATTERS

TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS CAN HELP CHILDREN FEEL SAFE, VALUED AND SUPPORTED, WHILE THE WAY A TEACHER TREATS A CHILD MAY LEAVE AN IMPRESSION THAT EXTENDS FAR BEYOND THE CLASSROOM.

Teacher care for learners is more than being friendly in the classroom.

The way a teacher speaks to a child, responds when something appears wrong and creates a sense of safety can become an important part of that learner’s experience of school.

That is the central message shared by Atta Smart, Educational Psychologist and Financial Educator at Smart Teachers Avenue, who argues that teachers can play an important role in the upbringing and development of a human being.

According to him, teachers should therefore pay attention not only to what learners are achieving academically, but also to what their behaviour may be communicating.

TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS CAN GO BEYOND ACADEMIC WORK

A teacher may enter the classroom primarily to teach, but learners bring much more than books into school.

They bring different personalities, family experiences, emotional needs and personal difficulties.

Atta Smart argues that some adults may still carry the effects of how teachers treated them when they were younger. In his view, interactions with teachers can contribute positively or negatively to a person’s confidence and social development.

This makes teacher care for learners an important part of professional practice.

A teacher may not know everything happening in a learner’s life.

But sometimes, paying attention can reveal that something is wrong.

TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS STARTS WITH PAYING ATTENTION

Consider what happens during break time.

Most learners may rush outside to play, eat or spend time with their friends.

But one learner remains behind.

Perhaps the child is sleeping with their head on the table.

Another may be walking around the classroom alone instead of joining everyone else.

It can be easy to ignore such behaviour.

Atta Smart encourages teachers to pay attention.

The behaviour does not automatically prove that something serious is wrong, but it can provide an opportunity for a teacher to check on the learner.

That simple act of teacher care for learners could begin with a question:

β€œAre you okay?”

TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS MEANS SHOWING CONCERN THROUGH ACTION

One of the strongest points in Atta Smart’s message is that children should not only hear that teachers care about them.

They should experience that care through teachers’ actions.

A concerned teacher can approach a learner appropriately, speak with the child and try to understand what may be happening.

Where a conversation is appropriate, it should take place responsibly and with due regard for the learner’s safety, privacy and the school’s child-protection procedures.

Sometimes a learner may simply need an adult who is willing to listen.

This does not mean teachers must become counsellors or attempt to solve every personal problem themselves.

Where a situation raises safeguarding, health or serious welfare concerns, the appropriate school authorities and referral procedures should be involved.

But teacher care for learners can begin with noticing that a child may need support rather than simply walking away.

5 POWERFUL WAYS TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

1. TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS CAN CREATE A SENSE OF SAFETY

Learners should be able to enter their classrooms without constantly feeling afraid, humiliated or unwanted.

Atta Smart encourages professional teachers to help learners feel secure, protected, cared for and loved.

A supportive classroom does not mean abandoning discipline.

It means maintaining discipline without destroying a learner’s dignity.

2. TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS CAN HELP TEACHERS NOTICE PROBLEMS

Behaviour can sometimes communicate what a child has not expressed verbally.

A learner who suddenly becomes unusually quiet, withdrawn or isolated may deserve attention.

There could be many explanations, so teachers should avoid immediately jumping to conclusions.

Instead, teacher care for learners means noticing changes and responding appropriately.

3. TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS CAN GIVE A CHILD SOMEONE WHO LISTENS

Not every learner has the same experience at home.

Atta Smart points out that some children may come to school hungry, while others may experience difficult parenting environments involving frequent shouting, harsh treatment or limited emotional support.

A teacher cannot control everything that happens outside school.

But the teacher can control how the learner is treated inside the classroom.

For some children, having an educator who listens respectfully may make school feel different from the difficulties they experience elsewhere.

4. TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS SHOULD EXIST EVEN WHEN TEACHERS HAVE GRIEVANCES

Atta Smart also acknowledges an important reality: teachers themselves have legitimate professional concerns.

Salary, conditions of service and other welfare issues can create frustration.

His argument, however, is that professional grievances should be channelled through the appropriate structures, including teacher unions, while teachers who are present in the classroom continue to perform their professional responsibilities properly.

As he puts it in the video, one principle he values is:

β€œIf it must be done, certainly it must be done well.”

His message is not that teachers should remain silent about poor conditions.

On the contrary, he encourages teachers to make their unions accountable and channel their grievances through them.

But those disputes should not result in innocent learners becoming the targets of teachers’ frustration.

5. TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS CAN LEAVE A LASTING IMPRESSION

Many adults can still remember particular teachers from childhood.

Sometimes they remember them because they were excellent teachers.

Sometimes because they offered encouragement at the right moment.

And unfortunately, some remember teachers because of painful experiences.

That is why teacher care for learners deserves attention.

Teachers may not always know which interaction a learner will remember years later.

A word of encouragement, an appropriate conversation or simply noticing that a learner is struggling can become meaningful.

TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS DOES NOT MEAN LOWERING PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

Showing care should not be confused with allowing learners to do whatever they want.

Professional teachers still have to teach, assess, correct behaviour, maintain classroom standards and enforce appropriate school rules.

The difference is in how those responsibilities are carried out.

Correction can happen without humiliation.

Discipline can happen without unnecessary hostility.

High expectations can coexist with compassion.

That balance is an important part of teacher care for learners.

TEACHER CARE FOR LEARNERS: WHAT EXPERIENCE HAVE YOU HAD?

Atta Smart ends his message by inviting teachers to share their own experiences.

Have you ever noticed that something was wrong with a learner and decided to check on them?

Did a simple conversation change the learner’s behaviour?

Has a former learner ever returned years later and reminded you of something positive you did that you had almost forgotten?

These experiences can help other educators understand the practical value of teacher care for learners.

Teachers have legitimate concerns about their own welfare, salaries and conditions of service.

Those issues deserve serious attention.

But when a teacher enters the classroom, there is also a learner looking to that teacher for instruction, guidance and, sometimes, reassurance.

And that may be one of the most important lessons in Atta Smart’s message:

A learner may eventually forget some of what was written on the board, but the way a teacher made that learner feel can be much harder to forget.

Smart Teachers Avenue encourages educators to continue developing professionally while creating classrooms where learners feel respected, protected and supported.
