The Ghana Education Service (GES) has formally responded to the concerns raised by newly posted teachers who picketed its headquarters on Monday, June 23, 2025, over delays in the issuance of staff ID numbers and non-payment of salaries.

In a press release signed by Daniel Fenyii, Public Relations Officer of GES, the Service acknowledged the grievances and outlined the steps taken to address the issue — signaling a renewed commitment to transparency, collaboration, and teacher welfare.

📌 Background of the Issue

GES recruited 12,807 graduates from the Colleges of Education in 2024. While 9,950 had received staff ID numbers and were paid by December 2024, a significant 2,113 had IDs but couldn’t be paid due to expired financial clearance. A further 582 had not received their IDs at all due to documentation issues such as discrepancies in SSNIT numbers, Ghana Card data, and self-reposting challenges.

🔍 Steps GES Has Taken So Far

✅ A nationwide staff validation exercise was carried out between March 7–14, 2025, to confirm genuinely recruited teachers and clean up irregularities.

✅ A technical committee, including representatives of the aggrieved teachers, has been formed to ensure consistent communication and follow-up.

✅ Letters have been forwarded via the Minister for Education to the Ministry of Finance, requesting an extension of expired financial clearance — a move supported by a budgetary allocation in the 2025 budget.

✅ GES has pledged to resolve all recruitment backlogs and address systemic inefficiencies to prevent future delays.

⚠️ Concerns About Representation

GES highlighted the challenge of inconsistent representation among protesting teacher groups. With each protest involving different sets of individuals, the Service called for a unified and coordinated approach to help streamline engagements and ensure lasting solutions.

GES Calls for Calm and Cooperation

While GES empathized with the frustrations of affected teachers, it emphasized that significant progress has already been made and reiterated its commitment to ensuring all qualified teachers receive their due remuneration. The Service called on teachers to remain calm and work together in good faith.
